How to use grass from a mowed lawn

[ad_1]

Having a lawn at your dacha, you probably regularly encounter the problem of how to dispose of the cut grass. Although, even if you don’t have a lawn yet, you still have to mow the grass in order to keep the site in an acceptable order, so as not to let the weeds flood the places you have cultivated.

So, any owner once has mowed grass. You can find out how to use it here by reading our article.

Brief content of the article:

Grass cutting composting

If your compost bin is large enough, adding grass to the compost is the best solution. This is especially true of grass that is damp, that which has been mowed in damp weather. This will avoid the torment with its drying. And it is simply impossible to think of other ways to use wet grass.

Grass belongs to the «green» group of ingredients in a truly good compost. It will enrich the finished product with nitrogenous components; it can be supplemented with any waste, fruit or food, for example, manure, bird droppings, freshly weeds, etc.

When laying compost, you should pay attention to one important nuance — this is the alternation of wet layers of greenery with dry ones, i.e. with fallen leaves, paper, straw. This is a guarantee of oxygen supply, accelerating the composting process. It also makes it possible to obtain a well-textured mass of finished fertilizer.

The cut grass can also act as an «accelerator» for the maturation of the compostable fertilizer. This requires herbal infusion, which includes:

  • 5 parts finely chopped herbs;
  • 20 parts of water;
  • 2 parts of litter collected in the chicken coop.

After infusing this mixture for several days, it is used to shed the layers.

Mowed grass is also able, thanks to the moisture contained in it, to “reanimate” the processes in a dried-up compost heap.

Grass cut mulch

After mowing the grass, it is often removed almost immediately. However, if the grass is not cut short (this is usually done in the heat), the greens can be used as mulch, after spreading it over the entire lawn. This protects the soil from overheating and retains soil moisture.

Mowed greens can also be used to mulch garden beds and tree trunks. The moisture contained in it is absorbed, providing nutrition to cultivated plants. And decomposing, green grass enriches the soil with useful substances, which we wrote about above. Moreover, mulch suppresses weeds and improves soil structure.

The thickness of the mulch layer should not exceed 7cm. Otherwise, the formation of a mucous mass containing pathogenic fungi is possible. To prevent the layer of mulching grass from becoming too dense, it is never laid without a slight preliminary drying.

The layer of grassy mulch gradually thins naturally. Therefore, it can be replenished with freshly cut grass. In autumn, the remaining mass should be plowed into the ground. Embedded organic matter loosens and structures it, thereby increasing soil fertility.

Turning cut grass into fertilizer

From mowed injuries, you can make organic top dressing. Moreover, it turns out to be very effective with its obvious cheapness and availability. The effectiveness of such a fertilizer is explained by the presence in the herbal mass of substances useful for plants, such as:

  • humic compounds;
  • nitrogen;
  • iron;
  • potassium.

The combination of these substances heals cultivated plants, stimulates the formation of chlorophyll in them, and improves their growth.

Of course, you can not do the cleaning of mowed greenery. As it decomposes, it will give its nutrients to the soil of the lawn. But we must admit that this picture will not differ in special aesthetics.

Therefore, cut greens can, for example, be used to prepare liquid fertilizer. It will be useful to all garden crops during their development and growth. Moreover, earth watered with such vegetable dressing will be very to the taste of earthworms.

To prepare fertilizer, you only need water. Although, if desired, its effectiveness can be increased by adding a little yeast, manure or EM preparations to it.

Prepare herbal dressing in the following sequence:

  • Finely chopped cut greens, it is placed in any large container to fill with water. It is better to use a plastic, enameled container to avoid a possible reaction with unprotected metal. An air gap of about 15 cm is left on top of the container.
  • Chopped weeds are often added to the mixture if weeding has been done recently.
  • Ash with mullein, manure or bird droppings is additionally loaded into the container and mixed thoroughly.
  • The mixed mixture is left to age, preferably in a sunny corner. This process usually takes about 2 weeks. Throughout this period, the mixture is periodically stirred.

As for the proportions, they can be approximate. But still, it is desirable that 5 kg of green mass be flavored with 10 tablespoons of ash and 8 liters of mullein.

The maturation of the mixture is accompanied by its fermentation and gradual darkening. The outgoing smell will be quite unpleasant, so it is advisable to cover the container with something. But it is undesirable to use a blind cover. The fertilizer is ready when the mass stops foaming, and the smell coming from it becomes less intense.

The ripened mass should be prepared before use. To do this, it is filtered, diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10. The prepared liquid produces root watering, pouring about 2 liters on each plant. Watering can also be done on the leaves, i.e. as a top dressing.

For one season, you can produce 2-3 dressing waterings.

Deodorant for the country «birdhouse» of cut grass

This use of cut greens is known to few. But the effectiveness of this is quite large.

When visiting a country toilet, each time you should throw a little cut grass or just chopped greens deep into the cesspool. From this, unpleasant odors are neutralized much faster, and the toilet contents decompose faster.

This method is attractive because it is environmentally friendly. Moreover, its implementation does not require any financial expenses.

Mowed grass for warm beds

If you have already mastered the technology of warm beds, then the grass cut from the lawn can be very useful to you. As you know, plant residues (including grass), flavored with half-rotted manure, are laid in layers in warm beds. The latter can also be supplemented with store-bought EMs.

If you mowed the grass in the last days of the season, when it had already faded and when its seeds had ripened, then the very place for it is the bottom of a warm high bed. Because so its seeds definitely will not germinate, and it will not interfere with cultivated plants.

The overheating of the vegetable «filling» is accompanied by the release of a rather large amount of heat. And this contributes to the development of plants, especially heat-loving ones, and especially when they are planted early. The crop on warm beds ripens faster, and the plants on it never suffer due to temperature changes. Such a bed is also convenient for the owner. Since it is spared from the annual concern for the introduction of organic fertilizers.

Cut grass for animal feed

If your neighbors keep some kind of living creatures, then you can forever forget about the headache associated with the disposal of cut grass. You can offer them to take it out of your site. Surely, these people will be very grateful to you for such an offer.

Moreover, such neighborly interaction can be turned into barter: by giving grass to your neighbors, you can get milk, eggs or something else from them.

So, such waste material as cut grass can always be very useful. There are many options for its use. The most important thing is to choose the one that is right for you.
