How I got rid of the «jungle» on the site

[ad_1]

Any site that has not been cared for for a long time appears before the new owners in an unsightly and abandoned form.
An overgrown garden, tall weeds, small shrubs, virgin soil in the garden — all this can cause a lot of trouble.
But if you decide to acquire your own estate, then be prepared not to complain about fate, but to seriously take up the improvement of the territory.
To begin with, it will not be superfluous to assess the relief of the site; for this, everything that interferes should be removed.
The easiest way to free the area from grass thickets is to mow it. If the grass is higher than half a meter or there is too much dead wood, then the first mowing is done with a mower with a metal knife.

When, after mowing, the grass begins to grow again, it is sprayed with glyphosate-based preparations (“Roundup”, «Tornado”, “Hurricane”, etc.). Once on the leaves of plants, they penetrate through the stem into the root system and destroy it.
NUANCE: any free plot of land automatically turns into a bed for growing weeds, because seeds remain in the ground for up to 5 years.
If you are not ready to immediately develop the entire area of the site, I recommend not resorting to chemistry and (or) plowing the soil, but simply repeating the mowing weekly. During the dry season, once every two weeks.
By interfering with the formation of the aerial parts of plants, you will weaken their root system. In this way, you can get rid of most types of weeds, including wheatgrass and nettles.
Gradually, these species will be replaced by other perennial grasses. What you get in the end — see the video:
Weed grass with a tall, thick, tubular stem is best dug up along with the root.
If you decide to plow the garden, you should make sure that horseradish does not grow on its territory. After all, cutting the roots of this plant will only increase its population. The only way to get rid of horseradish is to carefully dig it out along with the root and make sure that no pieces of the rhizome remain in the ground.
An unpleasant situation when poplars, birches, acacias and other easily propagating trees grew on a self-sowing site. Everything seems to be wonderful: the trees give a pleasant coolness and decorate the landscape.
On the other hand: poplar fluff causes an allergic reaction, birch strongly dries up the ground and nothing grows within a radius of six meters under it, acacia reproduces at an enviable rate and is armed with long thorns.
Moreover, the root system of trees that have grown close to the cellar, well, pool, foundation of the house can destroy these underground structures.
To remove an «uncomfortable» tree, simply cut it down and remove its base from the ground.

Medium-sized stumps are best left tall. The lateral roots are dug and cut, and the protruding trunk is tied with a chain or cable and the stump is pulled out with the help of a vehicle.

When there are too many stumps, it is better to remove them using special equipment. The most affordable in rural areas is an excavator, but you may have to invite him from the regional center and pay for travel time as work time 🙁

An easier way is chemical. It allows you to get rid of the stump not so quickly, but without much cost and physical effort. Holes at least 1 cm in diameter are drilled in the stump with a drill. Depth for the entire length of the drill.
Saltpeter is poured into the holes, spilled with water and left for several months. During this time, the wood will soak and become loose. Such a stump is easy to burn or it will collapse itself over time.
Salt corrodes wood well. It is poured into holes and filled with water. Under the influence of moisture, the salt will destroy the wood fibers and the stump will rot itself. The speed of the method depends on the density of the tree, the size of the stump and ranges from several months to several years.
From personal experience: stumps from old mulberries and plums on my site turned into dust in 4 years by themselves. The remains of the elm lasted a year less in the ground. They did not interfere with me, therefore I did not carry out any manipulations with them.

A small stump from a dried tree can simply be burned, overlaid with dry branches. If the stump wood is still damp, there is no point in burning it.
Cultivated plants can also add a lot of trouble. The natural instinct to preserve the population forces abandoned fruit trees and shrubs to start up root shoots. As a result, the garden turns into an impenetrable jungle.
These tree-like ones include: lilac, elderberry, viburnum, sea buckthorn, cherry, plum.
Noble fruit trees begin to sprout in several cases:
- when digging the root circle, the roots were damaged,
- in winter, the tree froze or animals peeled off the bark,
- the tree gets sick
- the tree is starting to age.
When the garden is neglected, it looks more like an impenetrable jungle.

Very young shoots are dug up, cut off with a scythe, older ones are cut down, and stumps, having chopped off the roots around the perimeter, are twisted.
I am a woman and many manipulations with a young plum tree turned out to be too difficult for me. Therefore, I armed myself (don’t laugh now) with a jigsaw (Bosch, if anyone is interested 🙂 and a small hatchet. I sprinkled fresh cuts with salt (recommended by a neighbor), chopped off the roots around and left for a while …. After two weeks, it was much easier to unscrew the stumps.
The old tree must be cut down and the stump removed, otherwise the shoots will grow again.
If the tree is relatively young and healthy, it is heavily pruned (but not more than 25% of the crown).
All the forces of the plant next year will be spent on restoring the skeleton and, perhaps, they will no longer be enough for «wolf» shoots. Otherwise, it is better to remove the tree and plant a new one in this place, bearing in mind that:
- in the root circle, it is better to refuse to dig the earth — only gentle loosening,
- for the winter, the lower part of the trunk is wrapped to protect against frost and rodents.
ATTENTION! It is impossible to permanently get rid of root shoots at one time. In subsequent seasons, trees and shrubs will sprout new shoots, but they will already be young and green. They should also be removed. You can carefully pull out of the ground (without digging) or treat with glyphosate preparations, doubling the concentration.

This is what mine looked like when I bought it. The impenetrable jungle of plum trees was so dense that it hid the cellar behind it. And the leaves haven’t blossomed yet!

And here, by the way, is he, but after the removal of the drain. This is what the place looked like a year after the clearing. Green curtains are young shoots, which I later removed by pulling them out with my hands. At first, I left adult plums, but in vain … They did not give fruits, so it was decided to saw them.

Instead of them, I planted three pines (light circles — this is the mulched planting of conifers). They are almost invisible in the photo, but for now. By the way, the photo was taken a week after the previous one.

Another year has passed, the young growth is no longer growing.
Five years later, my pines stretched out above my height and the tallest of them has already reached 2.5 meters in height.
In the photo: a winter landscape that opens from the threshold of an old, but still ready to serve as a temporary shelter for the house.
PS The jigsaw is still alive (and this is not an advertisement 🙂
What else to read on the site:

The relief of the site, formed in a natural way, looks quite attractive and rarely needs to be leveled, even if there is a height difference on it. But the territory left after the construction of the house often gapes with pits and mounds overgrown with grass…

The issue of planting fast-growing trees and shrubs is relevant not only for summer cottages, but also for any site. As a rule, the land allotment is issued to the future owner in a completely «naked» form.

Hozblok in the country — nowhere without it
Hozblok on the new site can become a «pioneer» among the buildings. It is for this reason that it is often made multifunctional. And it also happens that this term is called a small shed for storing inventory. And also…
