Funkia — green fountain

[ad_1]

Queen shadows…
All the beauty of the hosta lies in the leaves. From a large number of «tongues» of various sizes.

They can be light green, almost yellow, plain and two or three colors interspersed with milky, light yellow, apple green, gray, blue.
In addition, the leaves themselves have both a smooth, shiny texture, a waxy and even metallic coating, and a ribbed, wrinkled, dented surface and wavy edges.
Although funkia is considered the queen of the shade, many of its species feel great in sunny areas.

Another important advantage of this plant: it does not need to be replanted every 4-5 years, like other herbaceous perennials. At this age, the flowering of her beauty is just beginning and will last up to 25 years. That is, no transfer.
In general, given all of the above, the host can be safely chosen as the base plant for a «lazy» garden. Moreover, the choice of varieties is so large that it allows you to pick up dwarf plants from 6 cm to giants up to a meter or more in height.

Hosta blooms are not as lush, but breeders are working hard in this direction and are making some progress. A daylily was chosen as a flower donor. But as for me, everything is good in moderation, and the “fountain” of leaves looks quite luxurious and self-sufficient.

To form a beautiful dense rosette of leaves, the host should not be allowed to bloom. The flower stalks that have appeared should be broken out, then the compact shape of the bush will be preserved. This recommendation does not apply to hosta varieties that are specifically bred for beautiful flowers.
The flower stalks of the hosts grow from petioles, therefore they destroy the outlet with their own weight.
Funkia is a garden plant and needs to go through a wintering period. Therefore, it is not used as a room culture.
Borders, shady flower beds are created from the host, they are planted along the banks of reservoirs, included in compositions with tropical plants. Each function has its own sort. But even without knowing the exact name, you can independently determine which plant and where to plant.
- In the shade, varieties with thin green leaves feel most comfortable.
- Morning sun and shade from noon to evening are best for hostas with dove, blue, and yellow leaves. They are also recommended to be planted in areas with diffused light.
- Partial shade (sun in the morning and afternoon, but no more than 5 hours in total) are suitable for varieties with variegated leaves containing white. In the shade, they simply lose their decorative effect and turn green. This applies to individuals with thin leaves, afraid of sunburn.
- Sunny areas should be allocated to plants with thick leathery leaves.

However, in any case, the ground under the hosts should be moderately moist. To do this, in open areas, the soil must be mulched. If the edges of the leaves of the function began to dry out, then it needs to be watered more intensively, or it has received a sunburn and needs to be transplanted to a more shaded place.

COMPATIBILITY IN COLOR AND FORM

For the rounded shape of this plant, creeping species and vertical plants will be the most suitable addition. Red arrow leaves emperors will favorably emphasize the picture of the sun-loving variety of hosts.

The hosta is propagated by sprouting from seeds and dividing the bush.

The first way is slower and more troublesome, but if you set a goal, go for it. Seeds are planted in early January in a moist sterile (disinfected on a steam bath) substrate and the moisture-temperature balance is maintained in the tray.
Only by the end of summer will the seedlings acquire three adult leaves. That’s when they can be planted in open ground.

A simpler and more effective way is to divide the rhizome. Do it in the spring or at the end of August. Bushes for the season give adventitious plants, so they are separated with a knife.
Transplanted delenki or seedlings in pre-prepared soil. Why is a thick layer of compost poured at the landing site.
- The bed under the host is made raised to improve soil aeration.
- Growing distances between small and medium-sized hosts are chosen on the order of 20-30 cm, tall varieties are planted at a distance of 30-40 cm.
- An already formed bush is planted in a permanent place at the age of 4-5 years.
- Frequent division leads to leaf shredding, so do not abuse this method, divide only an adult plant.
