Limonium — choice for all seasons

[ad_1]

In the international classification, it is Limonium, more often on hearing and seed packages — Statica (e) (name according to the old classification), and in the Turkic version — Kermek.

This flowering perennial grows on all continents, and in Eurasia it can be found from the Mediterranean to the foothills of Altai.

A remarkable property of Kermek is that it is a dried flower, which means it will delight with its flowering both in summer and in winter.

In nature, limonium adorns meadows, in fact, this determines its name (from the Greek leimon — meadow). This also characterizes its qualities: unpretentious to soils (up to saline), drought-resistant. Its root system penetrates deep into the soil to a depth of more than a meter. A long and thin root does not make it possible to propagate Kermek by dividing the rhizome and transplanting.

Not all types of statice can be grown as a perennial in the climate of the Middle Strip, however, both perennial and annual are very good both in the landscape and in the cut.

broad-leaved kermek

Kermek is a long-flowering herbaceous plant. The flowering period lasts from July to October.

Highly ornamental heat-loving species grown in greenhouses are popular with florists.

Kermek (statica) is successfully sold as a dried flower to create flower arrangements.

POPULAR VIEWS

There are more than 150 species of Limoniums. Adapted to our conditions is not so much, I give six. The first three species are frost-resistant, they are grown in the garden, three more are grown as perennials in the open field, and as perennials in greenhouses for cutting.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW

To prepare kermek as a dried flower, the stem is cut off during the period of maximum decorativeness. The blanks are tied in bunches and dried down with flowers in the shade, in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place, or they are placed in containers (jars, vases) and dried under the same conditions.

KERMEK IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Despite the similarity of small flowers, in the landscape, each type of limonium looks different.

For example, broad-leaved kermek, its European name is sea lavender (pictured left).

Charming and sophisticated inflorescences look exquisite in the cut as an addition to bouquets, while in the array everything looks like foamy sea waves.

kermek perez

And this is what limonium perez looks like in the landscape. Thin threads of feather grass only emphasize the beauty of the lush inflorescences of Kermek.

COMBINATION IN COLOR AND SHAPE

An ideal pair for most types of kermek is ornamental cereals and plants that form vertical lines. These can be curtains of reed grass, sedge, falaris, feather grass, emperors, miscanthus, etc.

REPRODUCTION AND TRANSPLANT

Given the structure of the rhizome, kermek cannot be propagated by dividing the bush, dug up and transplanted. Therefore, it is propagated by seedlings.

Annual limoniums (seeds) are sown in the ground in late February-early March. The best way is immediately into peat cassettes under the film. Then the plant will painlessly survive transplanting into open ground. Seeds are either sown in furrows without shelter, or lightly sprinkled with sand.

Shoots will appear in a week and a half. Plants are grown until mid-May, observing moderate soil moisture. In the second half of May, seedlings are planted in a permanent place.

Perennial kermek (seeds) are sown from March to May, preferably in cassettes (with subsequent transplanting into pots). They germinate under the film until they sprout, the grown seedlings are transplanted into pots (carefully with a lump so as not to damage the roots). Plants are grown in pots until September, then they are planted in open ground.
