Astilboides and Darmera are almost twins

[ad_1]

Both of these plants are perennials. large huge leaves on high petioles, which are of decorative value for gardeners.

At first glance, they are difficult to distinguish, although they are very distant relatives. The birthplace of astilboides is China, and the Darmers are North America.
Both plants are not common in our gardens, but this is only because of a long-standing addiction to bright colors. The modern trend in gardening, focused on spectacular textures and naturalness in the landscape, has drawn the attention of designers to “modest” views with beautiful shapes.

How to distinguish between these two plants? The photo above shows both perennials. On the left — darmera, on the right — astilboides. Already in the photo you can see the difference in the texture of the leaves: on the left — glossy with pronounced veins, on the right — matte.

The second bright distinguishing feature is the flowers. Darmer blooms in early spring. First, the plant throws out flower stalks, then it begins to grow leaves and, finally, blooms. Very remotely, its flowering is similar to the flowering of bergenia. But what is there to be surprised, because they come from the same family (Saxifrage).

The third difference you will notice only in the fall — the darmer leaves will turn purple.
Astilboides was previously considered one of the types of Rogersia, but later brought into an independent form. This perennial blooms in the middle of summer, flower stalks are similar to astilba, hence the name.
Otherwise, both plants have the same «similarity». The root system is superficial, the shape of the leaves is almost identical, both are represented by only one species.
Darmer in nature grows in wet places of the coastal zone. And the height of leaf petioles in shading conditions reaches 1.5 meters. Can you imagine these giant leaf umbrellas up to 90 cm in diameter!
Astilboides is also not far behind: the diameter of its leaves can reach 1.5 m, but the petioles are not so high, “only” 1.2 m. And the growing conditions are the same.
In our climate, the size of the plants is not so impressive (about 40-50 cm high), however, both are ideal contenders for a flower garden in a moist shade.

Astilboides lamellar (Astilboides tabularis)

  • Growth area: China, North Korea.
  • Flowering period: July.
  • Color spectrum: green leaf with a matte surface, inflorescences consist of small beige flowers.
  • Height: peduncle up to 1.5 m, petiole in our conditions 40-50 cm.
  • Growing conditions: moist humus soil, partial shade, when planted in a sunny place, frequent abundant watering is required.
  • Peculiarities: leaf diameter in our climate reaches 70 cm, in nature up to 1.5 m.
Darmer thyroid, peltephyllum (Darmera (Peltiphillum) peltatum)
  • Growth area: wet undergrowth and shores of water bodies of North America.
  • Flowering period: April May.
  • Color spectrum: inflorescences with small pink flowers, juicy green leaves.
  • Height: petiole height in our climate up to 90 cm, peduncles 50-60 cm.
  • Growing conditions: rich, moisture-saturated soils, partial shade, when planting in the sun, abundant and frequent watering.
  • Peculiarities: glossy leaves with pronounced veins, up to 50 cm in diameter, in nature reach a diameter of 90 cm, acquire a purple color in autumn.
Both plants are quite aggressive towards their neighbors, so other plants can be planted to them no closer than 1 meter.
DARMERA AND ASTILBOIDES IN GARDEN DESIGN
Overseas «burdocks» are very textured herbaceous «large-sized». In the landscape, they look perfect as single curtains.
darmer blooms
They also create spectacular garden accents, exquisite framing of paths, ponds. Astilboides and darmer are appropriate where it is necessary to create the effect of a lush curtain and a riot of greenery.

COMBINATION IN SHAPE AND COLOR

In mixes at respectful disstoyanii near with astilboides and darmer, it is appropriate to plant plants with a radically opposite leaf shape: ferns, daylilies, hostas, boxwood, «frosty» brunners, variegated geyhers. Such a composition looks dynamic and bright in its own way, like an element of a tropical forest.

Darmer and Gunner
Plants with a similar leaf shape, but of different colors and different sizes, will create a harmonious green mix: gunnera, leathery bergenia, purple buzulnik, and at the foot — glossy hoof and modestly blooming violet.

REPRODUCTION AND TRANSPLANT

To propagate astilboides by seeds, they are pre-stratified, within a month, the time of sowing in the ground is April. Seeds are very small, shoots — too. However, young plants are very resistant and with sufficient moisture, a temperature of about +25 and moderate lighting, they will develop into adults. They will bloom no earlier than in 3-4 years.

The best way to propagate this perennial is to divide the rhizome into segments with one bud and a lateral shoot. The procedure is carried out in the spring, in early May. Delenki are immersed in fertilized soil and regularly moistened.
